Ring in 2026 Safely: Virginia’s Guide to a Sober Ride & a Smart New Year’s Eve

As Virginians prepare to welcome 2026, Virginia DMV is urging residents to plan ahead and prevent impaired driving during one of the most dangerous nights on the road.

New Year’s Eve consistently sees a sharp increase in alcohol-related crashes nationwide. In Virginia, where DUI penalties are among the toughest in the country, one impaired driving decision can lead to thousands of dollars in fines, possible jail time, a suspended license, job loss, and devastating, irreversible harm, with the total monetary cost often exceeding $11,000.

Even those who choose not to drink can help reduce drunk driving’s impact. Virginians who suspect they’re sharing the road with an impaired driver should report it by safely dialing #77. And while seatbelts don’t prevent crashes, they do remain the most effective protection against serious injury if another driver makes a dangerous choice.

WRAP’s New Year’s Eve Safety Tips

If you’re celebrating with alcohol:

  • Assign a sober driver in advance.
  • Use rideshare services.
  • Consider public transit options.
  • Book a nearby hotel to avoid late-night travel.

If you’re hosting:

  • Serve plenty of food and non-alcoholic drink options.
  • Stop serving alcohol well before the gathering ends.
  • Never serve minors or allow impaired guests to drive.
  • Help guests arrange a sober ride, taxi, or place to stay.

Virginia’s DUI Consequences

Penalties for driving under the influence vary by offense but are consistently tough.

First DUI: Minimum $250 fine, potential jail time, and a one-year license suspension.

Repeat offenses: Mandatory jail terms, higher fines, multi-year suspensions, and a third offense within ten years becomes a Class 6 felony, which may include permanent license revocation.

Financially, a first-time DUI in Virginia can cost thousands when fines, fees, legal representation, and increased insurance rates are added.
